What is sade sati?

Sade sati (literally 'seven and a half') is the period of roughly seven and a half years during which Saturn (Shani) transits the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross one sign, and about 29.5 years to go around the zodiac, so most people experience sade sati two or three times in life.

Because the Moon represents the mind, Saturn's slow passage over it is felt as a serious, reflective time. Saturn turns retrograde for a few months each year, so it often steps back into the previous sign before moving forward again. That is why a phase may appear as two or more date ranges in the result, and why there can be a short gap inside a sade sati when Saturn briefly leaves the three-sign zone. Tools that simply add two and a half years per sign will not show these details.
