What a kundli actually is
Read more
A kundli is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born - not a prediction, and not a personality test. Twelve houses, twelve rashis, nine grahas, and the question of which graha was standing in which house from where you were.
The word is the same thing as kundali, janam kundali, janam patrika and horoscope chart; different regions and different languages simply spell it differently. A Marathi speaker says patrika, a Hindi speaker says kundli, and the diagram is identical.
Everything in it comes from three facts: the date, the clock time, and the place. The date fixes where the slow grahas were. The place and the time together fix the lagna - which sign was climbing over the eastern horizon - and the lagna is what turns a sky map into YOUR chart. Two people born the same day in the same city a few hours apart share almost every graha position and have different charts, because the houses have rotated underneath.

Type the birth date. Type the time as exactly as you know it - from a birth certificate, a hospital record, or a family member who remembers. Pick the city. That is all of it; there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay.
If the time you have is written on a certificate, use that even if the family remembers something different: a certificate is written down within hours, and memory drifts by decades. If you have a range - 'some time in the morning' - read the section below on what a kundli can still tell you without the hour, because the honest answer is a lot, but not everything.

Start at the lagna, marked as the first house. In the North Indian diagram the first house is the diamond at the top centre and the houses run anticlockwise; in the South Indian diagram the twelve rashis are in fixed boxes and the lagna is marked where it falls. Both show the same chart - only the drawing convention differs, which is why a chart from one astrologer can look nothing like a chart from another and be identical.
Then find the Moon. In Vedic astrology the Moon's rashi is the one people mean when they say 'my rashi', and it is the Moon's nakshatra that sets your whole dasha sequence. If you only ever learn two things from your kundli, learn your Moon sign and your nakshatra.
Then read house by house: the first house is you and your body, the second money and speech and family, the third effort and siblings, the fourth home and mother, the fifth children and learning, the sixth work and illness and debt, the seventh marriage and partnership, the eighth change and inheritance, the ninth fortune and father and belief, the tenth career, the eleventh gains and friends, the twelfth expense and sleep and release. A graha in a house colours the matters of that house.
Finally look at the dasha. The Vimshottari dasha divides a life into periods ruled by each graha in turn, starting from where the Moon was in its nakshatra at your birth. It is the reason two people with similar charts can be living very different years.
Reading your kundli without a birth time

A great many people know the date and the city and not the hour, and the two usual answers are both bad: refuse them a chart, or quietly assume noon and hand them a lagna, houses and dasha dates that are fiction.
What survives a missing time is more than people expect. The Sun's rashi is safe unless you were born on the day it changed sign. Jupiter and Saturn move far too slowly for a day to matter. The Moon's rashi is safe on about three days in five - the Moon covers thirteen degrees a day, so on the other two it crosses a boundary and the answer genuinely depends on the hour.
What does not survive is the lagna, every house, everything counted from a house, and the dasha dates. The lagna changes every two hours. The dasha balance is read from the Moon's exact degree, and a day of doubt moves the dates by years. We do not approximate those here: a dasha that is 'probably about right' is exactly the kind of thing somebody plans around.
Kundli, kundali, patrika: one chart, many names

Searching for 'kundli' and 'kundali' and 'janam patrika' gets you the same thing. The North says kundli, Maharashtra says patrika, formal Sanskrit-leaning writing says kundali, and an English-medium school taught you to call it a birth chart.
There is one real distinction worth knowing, and it is not about the spelling: the Vedic chart is SIDEREAL and the Western horoscope is tropical. They disagree by about 24 degrees today, which is most of a sign - and that is why your Indian rashi is usually the sign before your Western sun sign. Neither is a mistake; they measure from different starting points.

First house (lagna): the body, the temperament, how you come across before you speak. The sign here and its lord matter more than any single graha anywhere else in the chart.
Second: money already earned, speech, food, and the family you were born into. Third: effort, courage, younger siblings, short journeys, and the hands. Fourth: mother, home, land, vehicles, and the state of mind you return to when nothing is happening.
Fifth: children, learning, intelligence, and whatever you do purely because you want to. Sixth: illness, debt, enemies, daily work, and competition - a difficult house to have crowded and a very good one to have a strong graha fighting in. Seventh: marriage, the business partner, and open dealings with other people.
Eighth: inheritance, insurance, the hidden, surgery, and change you did not choose. Ninth: fortune, the father, the teacher, long journeys and what you actually believe. Tenth: career, standing, and what people say you do.
Eleventh: gains, income from work, elder siblings, and the networks that bring both. Twelfth: expense, sleep, foreign places, hospitals and whatever you let go of.

Surya (Sun): the father, authority, the spine, confidence, government. Chandra (Moon): the mother, the mind, the way you take things, and the rashi Indian astrology calls yours.
Mangal (Mars): energy, property, courage, brothers, surgery, accidents. Budha (Mercury): speech, trade, calculation, nerves, and the ability to put a thing in words. Guru (Jupiter): wisdom, teachers, children, wealth that lasts, and the single most protective graha in the chart.
Shukra (Venus): marriage, comfort, art, vehicles, and what you find beautiful. Shani (Saturn): discipline, delay, labour, old age, and the lessons that arrive slowly and do not leave. Rahu and Ketu, the two nodes: Rahu for hunger, foreign things and sudden rise; Ketu for detachment, research and the thing you are strangely good at without trying.
Retrograde matters and is marked in your chart. A retrograde graha is not 'bad' - it is turned inward, and classical texts treat it as strong in its own peculiar way.
Dasha: why your chart and your year are different questions

A kundli is fixed at birth and never changes. What changes is which graha is currently running the show, and that is the Vimshottari dasha - 120 years divided between the nine grahas in a fixed order, starting from the nakshatra the Moon occupied when you were born.
Each mahadasha runs for a set number of years - Venus 20, Saturn 19, Jupiter 16, Rahu 18, Mercury 17, Moon 10, Ketu 7, Mars 7, Sun 6 - and divides into antardashas in the same proportion. The combination of the two is why a strong chart can have a flat decade and a difficult chart a very good one.
This is also why a birth time matters so much. The dasha balance at birth comes from how far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra, and an hour's error can move every date in the sequence by months.

The lagna and its degree. The Moon's rashi and nakshatra with its pada. All nine grahas with their rashi, degree, nakshatra and whether they are retrograde. The house each graha falls in. Your Vimshottari dasha, with the mahadasha and antardasha you are running now and the dates they change. Mangal dosha and sade sati, checked rather than asserted.
